BOJ Keeps Rates Steady But Signals Hawkish Resolve Amid Price Pressures
The Bank of Japan (BOJ) is set to keep interest rates steady at 1% on Friday, but deliver a hawkish signal as price pressures from the weak yen and Middle East conflict mount. Hawkish board member Hajime Takata may dissent and propose a hike to 1.25%, according to some analysts.
The BOJ's quarterly outlook report is also expected to revise up its growth forecast for fiscal 2026, citing receding fears of a severe hit from the Middle East conflict. However, the board is likely to cut its inflation forecast due to subsidies and a drop in oil costs from levels seen in April.
The weak yen has pushed import costs higher, hurting households and retailers. BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda will face the challenge of talking down the yen bears through hawkish communication, particularly with looming prospects of US rate hikes weighing on the yen's value against the dollar.
