BOJ Maintains Steady Interest Rates Amid Inflationary Pressures
The Bank of Japan (BOJ) maintained its interest rates steady on July 31, but signaled its intent to continue increasing borrowing costs in response to inflationary pressures. This decision comes after the Japanese government's overnight intervention to boost the yen, which failed to provide lasting support.
BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda emphasized the need for vigilance against upside price risks, stating that 'given that underlying inflation is approaching our 2% target, we must scrutinize upside price risks more than ever.' This sentiment will guide BOJ policy discussions from their next meeting onwards.
Notably, Board member Hajime Takata was the sole dissenter to the rate decision, advocating for a hike to 1.25% to address inflationary risks stemming from external demand shocks.
