BOJ Poised to Raise Interest Rates as Inflation Signals Strengthen
The Bank of Japan is poised to raise interest rates in September due to strengthened signals of broadening inflation. According to data released on August 26, Japan's Corporate Service Price Index rose by 3.6% year-on-year in July, exceeding the expected 3.2% and the revised 3.4% for June. On a month-on-month basis, the index increased by 0.4%, reversing the 0.4% decline recorded in the previous month.
This acceleration in service-sector inflation has reinforced the Bank of Japan's assessment that tightness in the labor market is driving companies to pass costs on to consumers. The data also showed that core consumer inflation accelerated in July, driven primarily by a weak yen and rising import costs associated with conflicts in the Middle East.
The breadth of inflationary pressures, spanning consumer prices, import costs, and inter-business service prices, has reinforced the assessment that the central bank faces genuine urgency. Market participants anticipate that the Bank of Japan will raise interest rates as soon as September and may consider a more aggressive tightening pace.
