BoJ Policy Support Remains Intact Amid Yen Volatility Risks
Policy support for Bank of Japan (BoJ) rate hikes remains intact, despite ongoing market speculation about its next move and potential government intervention to support the yen.
Brown Brothers Harriman (BBH) analysts pointed out that the BoJ's commitment to normalizing monetary policy is a key pillar for the yen. They cited recent comments from BoJ officials and the central bank's quarterly outlook report, which signaled confidence in achieving its 2% inflation target sustainably.
This confidence keeps the door open for further rate hikes in the coming months, despite market expectations of a slower pace. BBH analysts also noted that the yen's weakness is primarily driven by the wide interest rate differential between Japan and the U.S., with the Federal Reserve maintaining higher rates for longer.
However, they believe that as the BoJ continues to hike, the differential will narrow, providing fundamental support for the yen over the medium term. The analysts also touched on the heightened risk of currency intervention by Japanese authorities, which could cause sharp volatility in USD/JPY movements if it were to happen.
