BOJ Policymakers Eye Faster Rate Hikes Amid Rising Inflation Concerns
Bank of Japan (BOJ) policymakers are considering raising interest rates more quickly in response to growing inflation risks. The central bank's July 30-31 monetary policy meeting summary showed that some members want to withdraw support from the economy faster than anticipated.
In a warning, one policymaker stated that materializing upside price risks could deal a 'significant blow' to Japan's economy and daily lives. This might force the BOJ to impose rapid and substantial rate hikes, resulting in a 'double shock' for the economy.
Another opinion described the BOJ as entering a 'new phase' requiring a 'nimble approach.' It suggested that policymakers consider varying the size of each rate rise based on changing circumstances rather than following a predetermined schedule.
