BOJ Policymakers Flag Inflation Risks Ahead of Potential September Rate Hike
Bank of Japan policymakers have raised concerns about inflation risks, potentially leading to an interest rate hike in September. A summary of opinions from their July meeting highlighted a growing concern over the risk of underlying inflation surpassing the BOJ's target of 2 percent.
Rising import costs due to a weak yen, strong demand for AI-related goods, and high fuel prices resulting from the Middle East conflict have contributed to these concerns. Several board members emphasized the need for vigilance in addressing this risk, with one member stating that the pace of rate hikes could be faster than expected.
Another member called for a faster pace of adjustment to monetary accommodation, citing the risk of waiting as no longer marginal. Two other opinions supported 'nimbly' raising interest rates to address inflation risks and push the BOJ's policy rate closer to neutral levels.
