BOJ Prepares for Another Key Speaking Event Ahead of Rate Hike Decision
The Bank of Japan (BOJ) is gearing up for another speaking event ahead of its next policy meeting in September. This time, it's board member Kazuyuki Masu who will deliver a speech and hold a news conference on September 10.
This comes as the market expects the BOJ to raise interest rates at its September meeting, a move that could have significant implications for the yen. The BOJ has been hinting at a rate hike in recent speeches by executives.
Board member Hajime Takata, who dissented on the BOJ's decision to keep rates steady in July, is scheduled to speak on September 2. Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino will also deliver a speech on August 27.
The September meeting is seen as a crucial one for the BOJ, with many market participants expecting a rate hike. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has signaled his desire for an early rate hike, and the BOJ's Governor Kazuo Ueda may meet him at a G20 finance leaders' meeting to be held on August 31 and September 1.
According to Nomura Securities executive rates strategist Mari Iwashita, 'Whenever Bessent made comments on Japanese monetary policy, the BOJ followed through with rate hikes.' With domestic producer prices spiking and expected to continue rising, there's a strong chance the BOJ will raise rates in September.
