BOJ Prepares for Potential Rate Hike Amid Inflationary Risks
Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda has signaled that the central bank will continue to raise interest rates to adjust still-accommodative financial conditions. In a recent news conference, Ueda mentioned that the BOJ will debate this month whether upside inflation risks are heightening, which could keep alive the chance of a September rate hike.
The BOJ has already raised interest rates five times since June, bringing them to a 31-year high of 1 per cent. However, Ueda emphasized that the central bank needs to carefully assess the cumulative impact on the economy before making further decisions.
Inflationary risks are a concern for the BOJ, particularly from the Middle East conflict and a weak yen. Ueda mentioned that these factors could increase upside price risks and underscored the need for vigilance in guiding monetary policy.
