BOJ Rate Hike Bets Send Japanese Bond Yields Soaring
The Japanese government bond (JGB) yield has reached its highest level in nearly three decades due to rising global borrowing costs and expectations of a Bank of Japan rate hike. The 10-year JGB yield rose to 2.945% on Tuesday, its highest since September 1996, as investors reassess inflation outlooks.
The increase in yields comes amid concerns over renewed inflationary pressures driven by higher oil prices and the lack of progress in Middle East peace talks. Energy costs are making it more difficult for major central banks to ease monetary policy, while investors are also watching the potential impact on economic growth and inflation expectations.
Recent comments from BOJ officials have taken a more hawkish tone, strengthening expectations that the central bank could accelerate monetary tightening. Some members of the BOJ policy board may support more aggressive tightening than pursued so far, contributing to the rise in benchmark yields.
