BOJ Rate Hike Bets Soar as Japan Wholesale Inflation Stays Elevated
The Bank of Japan's (BOJ) latest wholesale inflation data shows that prices continue to rise, with July's annual increase at 7.2% according to BOJ data. This is slightly below the forecasted 7.4% but still close to June's 7.3% gain. The producer price index (PPI), which measures prices charged by companies for goods and services, rose 0.1% on a month-on-month basis in July.
The BOJ has been adopting a more hawkish tone on inflation, with some policymakers favoring faster interest rate increases to combat rising inflation risks. The data is likely to reinforce market expectations of a September rate hike, particularly as the central bank remains concerned about higher import costs and a weaker yen.
Price pressures were broad-based in July, with nonferrous metals prices jumping 40.6% from a year earlier and chemical product prices rising 12.9%. The yen-based import price index increased 29.1% year-on-year in July, indicating that the weaker yen continues to increase the cost of imported goods and raw materials.
