BOJ Rate Hike Case Intact as Japan's Producer Price Growth Slows

Japan's producer price index rose to 7.2% year on year in July, missing economists' forecasts of 7.4%. Despite the miss, prices remain historically elevated and near multi-year highs. The monthly figure showed a modest increase of just 0.1%, down sharply from June's 0.4% gain.

Electricity prices drove the modest monthly increase, adding around 0.23 percentage point to the basket, partly offset by falling energy and chemical prices elsewhere. This mix suggests genuine easing in energy-linked cost pressure rather than a broad-based cooling across the producer price index.

The more significant number lies outside the headline PPI figure: yen-based import prices climbed 29.1% year on year in July, only modestly down from 30.1% in June. This scale of imported inflation continues to weigh heavily on Japanese businesses as a weaker currency inflates the cost of dollar-denominated purchases.

The persistence of imported inflation adds to the case for a Bank of Japan rate hike in September, echoing a broader regional theme where Reserve Bank of Australia Assistant Governor Christopher Kent flagged upside inflation risk and left open the possibility of further hikes.
