BOJ Rate Hike Confirmed: Yen Strength Dominates Market Amid External Risks

The Bank of Japan's interest rate hike in September is now all but certain, with investors fully pricing in a 25-basis-point increase. The yen has been on an upward trend, and its recent strength has become the dominant variable in regional markets.

According to Michael Wan, an analyst at Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, the core focus remains on the trend of the yen's appreciation, with domestic economic data from Japan being mixed. Labor cash income has been strong, but GDP figures have been softer.

The USD/JPY exchange rate has experienced significant volatility over the past 24 hours, dropping to 152.88 before rebounding slightly to close near 153.97. Traders believe that short-term volatility reflects more of position adjustments and shifts in risk sentiment rather than a fundamental change in policy expectations.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent's recent comments have added an additional variable to the policy game, hinting at U.S. concerns regarding the yen's exchange rate. Bessent challenged traders and the market, implying that he possesses superior information about Japanese policymakers' intentions and the Bank of Japan's actions.
