BoJ Rate Hike Expectations Boost Japanese Yen Against US Dollar
The Japanese Yen has strengthened against most major currencies as markets increasingly price in a Bank of Japan rate hike in September. According to MUFG's Derek Halpenny, this is due to services PPI data and hawkish commentary from former BoJ officials reinforcing expectations of tightening.
Market pricing indicates that the implied probability of a BoJ rate hike at the September meeting has reached 85%, its highest level since June. This suggests that the BoJ will likely raise rates in September, as stated by former BoJ policy board member Seiji Adachi in an interview with Bloomberg.
With the Federal Reserve's decision to hold interest rates steady two days earlier, a potentially cautious tone at Jackson Hole could further contribute to downside pressure on USD/JPY. If there is no strong signal from Warsh for a hike in September, front-end rates may soften in the US, and with strong expectations of a BoJ rate hike, this could provide some impetus for a further decline in USD/JPY.
