BOJ Rate Hike Expectations Send Japanese Government Bond Yields Soaring
Japan's benchmark 10-year government bond yield has reached its highest level in over three decades, hitting 2.93% on the 17th. This marks a roughly 30-year high for the JGB yield, which has been driven up by expectations of an early Bank of Japan rate hike.
The move is seen as a result of market speculation that the BOJ will raise its policy rate as soon as September. Following the joint U.S.-Japan currency market intervention late last month, investors have grown more confident that Washington supports early monetary tightening by the BOJ.
Within the Bank of Japan itself, some members are advocating for additional rate hikes. One member noted that the timing of future rate hikes 'could be earlier than the market expects,' while another expressed concerns about the risk of waiting too long to adjust interest rates.
The sharp rise in JGB yields is viewed as a reassessment of the pace of the BOJ's policy shift, which has been gradually raising its policy rate this year. However, some analysts caution that the recent yield surge may be due for a technical correction, given its steep pace.
