BOJ Rate Hike Looms as Ueda's Comments Take Center Stage
The Bank of Japan (BOJ) is widely expected to raise its overnight rate by 25 basis points to 1.25% on September 18, but the real question is what Governor Kazuo Ueda will say about future increases.
The BOJ's own record suggests that this meeting is less of a binary guessing game than it first appears. In July, the Policy Board voted 8-1 to hold the overnight rate near 1%, with one member, Hajime Takata, proposing 1.25% as the official July policy statement shows.
The subsequent summary of board opinions described financial conditions as accommodative and supported continuing rate increases if the economy and prices follow the BOJ's outlook. This unusually clear groundwork for another move suggests that a quarter-point increase is likely.
However, investors should not assume that this will be the only increase, as Governor Ueda's language will be crucial in determining future policy direction. The market has already priced in expectations of higher rates, with economists polled expecting 1.5% by the end of March 2027 and 1.75% in the following quarter.
