BOJ Rate Hike Speculation Sends JGB Yields Soaring
The Japanese government bond (JGB) yield has surged to its highest level in nearly three decades, reaching 2.930% on August 17. This marks a significant increase of 0.055 percentage points from the previous weekend and brings the yield closer to the psychologically important 3% threshold.
The driving force behind this move is speculation that the Bank of Japan (BOJ) will raise interest rates at its next monetary policy meeting in September. Following the coordinated intervention by the Japanese and U.S. governments to stabilize the yen, market participants have become increasingly confident that an early rate hike is on the horizon.
According to multiple sources familiar with the matter, the BOJ is considering accelerating the pace of rate hikes to address upside risks to inflation. This has led to a sharp increase in the probability of a September rate hike, with market pricing reaching approximately 75% as of August 14.
