BoJ Tightening Debate Shifts in Favor of Monetary Policy

Rabobank strategist Elwin de Groot believes that Japanese policymakers are increasingly focused on achieving the inflation target sustainably and supporting the Japanese Yen. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has emphasized the importance of Bank of Japan independence while highlighting the need to achieve the inflation target sustainably, further shifting the debate in favor of monetary tightening.

Following recent FX intervention, de Groot notes that exchange-rate management ultimately needs monetary policy backing. With USD/JPY retracing part of its earlier decline, he argues that the case for another Bank of Japan rate hike is gradually strengthening.
