BOJ Yen Intervention Leaves Traders Guessing About Exchange-Rate Level
Japan's yen jumped to a high of 155.20 per dollar on Monday, but Bank of Japan (BOJ) data left traders uncertain about whether officials had intervened in currency markets again.
The BOJ said it carried out joint yen-buying intervention with the US on Friday, following a separate operation in New York markets a day earlier that Reuters estimated could have totaled up to $58.97 billion.
Traders tried to confirm whether there had been a third round of intervention by watching BOJ 'plumbing' data, but signals didn't line up neatly in real time due to settlement lags and routine cash-management operations.
