BOJ's July Meeting Scheduling Sets Stage for Hawk-Dove Showdown
The Bank of Japan has scheduled its next year's July policy meeting for the 21st and 22nd, which is significant because it allows two hawkish board members to vote before their five-year terms expire.
Naoki Tamura and Hajime Takata are known as advocates of faster interest rate hikes, and their departure in July gives Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi the chance to fill two more seats with proponents of reflationary policies.
This could potentially tilt the balance of the board in a more dovish direction, complicating the BOJ's efforts to push through further rate hikes.
The central bank is set to raise rates as soon as September and is considering hiking more aggressively thereafter to avoid falling behind the inflation curve.
