BOJ's Pre-Meeting Speeches Spark Rate Hike Speculation

The Bank of Japan (BOJ) has scheduled a third speaking engagement for board member Kazuyuki Masu ahead of its highly anticipated September policy meeting, fueling speculation about an imminent interest rate hike.

Masu will deliver a speech and hold a press conference on September 10, following previously scheduled appearances by Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino on August 27 and Board Member Hajime Takata on September 2. The cluster of public appearances mirrors a pattern the BOJ has used before past rate increases.

Takata, known for his hawkish views, dissented from the BOJ's decision to hold rates steady in July, advocating instead for an immediate increase to 1.25%. Both Himino and Masu are seen as favoring a near-term rate hike, adding weight to the view that these speeches could carry decisive policy signals.

Market expectations for a September rate hike have hardened following last week's joint Japan-U.S. currency intervention and comments from U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent signaling a desire for the BOJ to raise rates sooner rather than later.
