BOJ's Takata Pushes for Nimble Rate Hikes Amid Inflation Fears

Bank of Japan (BOJ) board member Hajime Takata is urging a more nimble approach to interest rate hikes, arguing that the current semiannual pace may not be sufficient to combat intensifying inflationary pressures. Speaking at a news conference in Sapporo, Takata emphasized that the global economy has undergone significant changes since recent years and that Japan is now facing unique challenges such as inflation linked to the Middle East conflict.

Takata noted that the global economy is recovering with support from fiscal measures and AI-led investment, which could lead to stronger growth and higher interest rates. He also cautioned that divergences between Japanese and overseas monetary policies may trigger volatility in financial markets, particularly foreign exchange markets.

When asked about Japan's benchmark 10-year bond yield hitting 3% this week, Takata declined to comment on specific levels but stated that the development largely reflects a broader global rise in interest rates. He also stressed the importance of the BOJ responding flexibly to economic and price developments, rather than adhering to a fixed pace or magnitude of rate hikes.

Takata's comments come as sources have told Reuters that the BOJ is set to raise the rate at its two-day policy meeting through September 18, with some considering hiking more aggressively than the current pace of roughly two times a year. The BOJ's decision will likely be closely watched by markets and may have implications for Japan's economic growth.
