BOJ's Takata Seeks Flexible Rate Hikes Amid Overseas Inflation Fears
Bank of Japan Policy Board member Hajime Takata has called for flexible rate hikes to address overseas-driven inflationary pressures. In a speech at a financial and economic forum in Sapporo, he emphasized that the BOJ must 'respond flexibly without being bound by fixed intervals or magnitudes of rate hikes.'
Takata, who is seen as one of the most hawkish members of the Policy Board, argued that the BOJ's monetary policy management has entered a new phase. He pointed out that overseas central banks have begun to raise interest rates, and that Japan needs to demonstrate its commitment to preventing upside inflation.
Takata expressed concern about the potential impact of rate hikes on the Japanese economy, but noted that 'downside scenarios for the economy have receded' and concerns about deflation have diminished. He emphasized the need for the BOJ to adapt to changing circumstances and not be constrained by fixed intervals or magnitudes of rate hikes.
