Bond Market Turmoil Weakens Pound as US Dollar Rises
The Pound to US Dollar exchange rate declined on Wednesday due to turmoil in global bond markets. The GBP/USD fell by approximately 0.3% from its opening levels, reaching $1.3477 at the time of writing.
The surge in borrowing costs across major economies has raised expectations that central banks may need to maintain restrictive monetary policy for longer. This led to a strengthening of the US Dollar against most of its major counterparts, with investors seeking the relative safety of the 'Greenback.'
In the UK, government bond yields rose sharply, with the 10-year gilt yield reaching its highest level since 2008 and the 30-year yield climbing to levels last seen in 1998. This increase presents particular challenges for the UK government, which may struggle to deliver planned spending commitments due to higher debt-servicing costs.
The publication of the latest ISM services PMI could be a significant catalyst for the Pound to US Dollar exchange rate. The August index is expected to show growth across the US services sector picked up, potentially providing another boost to the US Dollar and reinforcing expectations of further Federal Reserve tightening.
