Bond Markets Bracing for Impact as Global Tensions Soar
Global bond markets are experiencing significant turmoil due to rising government debt levels, fiscal deficits, and renewed fighting in the Middle East. The US has passed $40 trillion in debt with no signs of slowing down, while other major economies have also seen their debt-to-GDP ratios rise above 100%. This has led to higher yields on government bonds, with the UK's 30-year bond yield hitting its highest level since 1998 and Japan's 10-year yield breaking through the 3% mark for the first time in three decades.
The renewed fighting in Iran has pushed oil prices higher, eliciting concerns of inflation. US diesel futures surged to a 52-month high earlier this week, while consumer prices in the Eurozone climbed 3.3% in August year-on-year, the fastest pace of inflation in nearly three years. The recent move higher in oil prices will only make this worse.
The European Central Bank has noted that US tech giants are flooding European bond markets to fund AI investment, potentially reaching $1 trillion by 2028 and crowding out other borrowers, including governments. This trend is contributing to the rising rates on government bonds.
