Bond Yields Soar Amid Oil Price Surge and Inflation Fears
Global bond markets are experiencing a surge in yields amid rising oil prices and inflation concerns. Long-term bond yields in Europe's largest economies have reached their highest levels in years, while US Treasury yields have climbed to nearly two decades high.
The sell-off is attributed to the recent increase in oil prices, with Brent crude trading near $91 a barrel on Tuesday morning. The heightened energy costs are fueling fears of persistent inflation, which could prompt central banks to raise interest rates.
According to Richard Carter, head of fixed income research at Quilter Cheviot, the stalled US-Iran peace talks have increased the likelihood of elevated energy prices through the end of the year. This, in turn, may keep inflation above expectations and increase the chances of central banks raising interest rates.
