Bond Yields Soar as AI Cycle, Energy Prices, and Fed Uncertainty Converge
Global bond yields have been rising sharply as several pressures converge. One of the key factors is the scale of the AI investment cycle, where companies are turning to capital markets to finance significant infrastructure spending and governments are funding sizeable budget deficits. This increased demand for debt is putting upward pressure on yields.
Another factor is energy prices, with West Texas Intermediate crude trading above $90 per barrel, roughly 30% higher than its June lows. Higher energy prices could feed through into inflation and add another layer of uncertainty for bond investors.
The path of Federal Reserve policy remains another important source of volatility, with markets receiving mixed signals from policymakers in recent weeks. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh struck a hawkish tone at Jackson Hole, suggesting the central bank may still have work to do on interest rates.
