Bond Yields Trump Dollar Debasement as U.S. Dollar Strengthens
Copper, silver, and gold prices have taken a hit as investors shift their focus from dollar debasement to rising bond yields and a strengthening U.S. dollar. According to Fawad Razaqzada, Market Analyst for StoneX Media, the market has set aside the dollar debasement argument, at least for now.
The reason behind this change lies in the increase of crude oil prices, which has lifted consumer inflation expectations and pushed bond yields higher. This, in turn, has caused the U.S. dollar to strengthen, rather than weaken as it would have under a dollar debasement scenario.
Razaqzada notes that 'the reaction in the bond market suggests that investors had been positioned for an even larger operation' of Treasury buying back long-dated government bonds. This has led to the U.S. dollar strengthening on an announcement that might have been expected to weaken it.
