A roundtable discussion was held at the University of Derby's Cavendish Building to gather feedback from Bondholders in the retail and hospitality sectors. The session, facilitated by Marketing Derby, aimed to help the Bank of England understand the current operating environment and the challenges facing local businesses.

The roundtable was attended by representatives from various companies, including Bouquet Wines, BEAR, Radisson Blu, and PKF Smith Cooper. Catherine Mann, an external member of the Monetary Policy Committee, explained how the MPC determines the Bank of England's monetary policy, including interest rate rises and data collection.

The Bondholders shared their concerns about ongoing inflationary pressures, rising labor costs, business rates, and increased energy costs. They also discussed changing consumer behavior and the challenges of training young employees due to high staff turnover. According to Nichol Malia-Barlow, owner of Darley Abbey Wines, 'It was really valuable to join fellow Bondholders to have an open and honest conversation about the challenges we are all facing.'

Paul Mount, the Bank of England's agent for the East Midlands, stated that hearing from SMEs is crucial for the interest rate committee's understanding of current economic conditions. He expressed gratitude to the roundtable participants for sharing their insights.
