Brazil Stands Alone as Latin America Markets Divided by Fed Hike Bets

Latin American markets were split in their response to the latest US inflation reading, which has pushed traders to bet on an 85.4% chance of a Federal Reserve rate hike next week.

The hotter than expected inflation data sent shockwaves through global markets, causing the MSCI's Latin America stocks index to fall 0.5% and the region's currency index to slip 0.1%. However, Brazil stood out as an exception, with its Bovespa index dropping 0.5% even as the real edged up 0.1%.

According to Reuters, a newly unsealed court document connected to Senator Flavio Bolsonaro's probe is seen as a potential drag on sentiment in Brazil, particularly ahead of the upcoming election where polls show a tight race between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Bolsonaro.

Malcolm Dorson at Global X argues that Latin American central banks have become more willing to run their own playbooks since the pandemic, making country-level stories matter more than the Fed's actions. This trend is evident in Brazil, where cooling local inflation strengthens the case for easier policy and potentially a rate cut.

As investors weigh these factors, the 85.4% Fed-hike bet poses a real stress test for Brazil's stocks and currency. With tighter global financial conditions, dollar borrowing becomes pricier, and investors demand higher returns to hold riskier assets, which can weigh on emerging-market equities.
