BRICS Launches Alternative Payment System to Challenge US Dollar Dominance
The BRICS Pay system is expected to launch at the upcoming New Delhi summit in August 2026, which could mark a significant shift in international trade. According to Russian Senator Vladimir Dzhabarov, BRICS Pay is not a single currency, but rather a payment system that aims to link national payment systems and potentially integrate digital currencies of central banks.
The platform was initially proposed by India's central bank in January as a way to facilitate tourism and trade between BRICS countries. However, the Trump administration has expressed concerns about the move, calling it 'anti-American' and warning against bypassing the US dollar.
BRICS Pay could potentially weaken the US dollar if successful, as it would give member nations an alternative to SWIFT, a global financial messaging network currently dominated by Western countries. The alliance has grown significantly in recent years, with 11 member nations accounting for 45% of the world's population and 35% of GDP.
However, challenges remain, including internal divisions between member nations and the difficulty of integrating different payment systems into a single regulatory framework. Additionally, BRICS Pay is currently available only for foreign tourists in select cities in Russia, with technical issues still to be addressed.
