BRICS Shifts Focus from De-dollarization to Derisking from Dollar Exposure
The BRICS Summit in New Delhi has clarified its stance on reducing dependence on the US dollar. Instead of advocating for de-dollarization, India and other member countries are pushing for derisking from excessive dollar exposure.
This approach aims to create alternative channels for trade, investment, and payments that can reduce transaction costs and protect against external shocks. The New Delhi Declaration highlights the need for cross-border payment mechanisms that are fast, low-cost, accessible, efficient, transparent, and safe.
The BRICS Payment Task Force is exploring solutions to achieve these goals. India's emphasis on derisking from dollar dependence reflects its pragmatic approach to reducing reliance on the US currency. This stance acknowledges economic realities and the need for diverse national priorities in achieving financial resilience.
