Bulgaria's Eurozone Transition: A Successful Start, but Long-Term Stability is Key
Bulgaria's transition to the eurozone has been successful so far, according to BNB Governor Dimitar Radev. In an analysis published on the BNB website, he notes that the country entered the eurozone with a well-capitalized and liquid banking system, a conservative supervisory tradition, and a developed macroprudential framework.
Radev points out that seven months after the introduction of the euro, payments were not interrupted, accounts were converted, available money was secured, and customers were served. He believes society will evaluate membership in the eurozone not just by the quality of the technical transition but also through everyday life experiences such as prices, interest rates, access to credit, and savings security.
The BNB Governor emphasizes that the framework is stronger, which means their responsibility also increases. For the BNB, the next stage involves active participation in the Eurosystem, providing accurate explanations of inflation, monitoring the internal credit cycle, and maintaining preventive capital policy.
Radev stresses that banks must maintain prudent lending, strong management, transparent customer relations, and sufficient capital buffers. He warns against excessive indebtedness and emphasizes the need for better quality lending, risk-adjusted, supported by sustainable income, and able to withstand adverse conditions.
