Burnham Confronts £24 Billion UK Inflation Squeeze
UK public services face a significant challenge due to rising inflation and energy prices, according to the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR). The think tank warns that higher costs will eat into departmental budgets, resulting in a £24 billion ($31.9 billion) hit for the current parliamentary term.
The report highlights that new Prime Minister Andy Burnham will have to make 'very difficult trade-offs' due to spending allocations made last year no longer stretching as expected. The NIESR advises against borrowing more to fill the budget hole, citing that the national debt is already unsustainable.
