Burnham's Cost-of-Living Challenge: Can He Deliver on Promises?

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has vowed to ease the cost of living for Brits since taking office. In his first speech, he promised 'some breathing space' and has followed through with a series of policies aimed at making everyday life more affordable.

These measures include capping single bus rides at £2, scrapping VAT on household electricity bills, banning 'subscription traps', and reducing business rates for pubs, social clubs, and live music venues by 20% from April onwards.

Burnham's government has also pledged to help the number of unemployed young people, with a focus on those aged 16-24 who have surpassed one million without work for the first time in over a decade.

However, Burnham acknowledged that his changes might not be enough and that he is working within 'limited room for manoeuvre'. He cited rising energy costs due to the Iran war as a major obstacle, with UK inflation reaching 2.9% in July.

The Energy regulator Ofgem predicts household energy bills will rise by 4% in October, hitting a three-year high this winter and exceeding any benefits from Burnham's VAT cut on electricity bills.

Farmers are also warning of significant price increases due to supply chain disruptions, extreme weather events caused by climate change, and geopolitical volatility. Dr Liliana Danila, chief economist at the Food & Drink Federation (FDF), stated: 'Supply chain disruption isn't going away.'

The Bank of England will decide whether to raise interest rates next month, which could add further pressure on Burnham's government.
