The federal government's Buy Canadian policy is creating new opportunities for Nunavut and Nunavik, where public infrastructure projects are in high demand. The policy prioritizes Canadian suppliers and materials when building new projects, with a goal of strengthening the Canadian economy.

Recently, the government announced that Inuit-owned Arctic Fresh Projects Inc. has been awarded a $35.6-million contract to build a 23-unit apartment building in Iqaluit using predominantly Canadian steel, aluminum, and lumber. This is one of the first contracts awarded under the new policy.

The construction project will provide housing for some of the approximately 200 federal government employees in the city. Premier John Main has emphasized the need for more healthcare facilities closer to home, which could be supported by federal financial aid for infrastructure projects.
