CAC 40 Slides 0.76% Amid AI Safety Fears and Surging Oil Prices
The French benchmark CAC 40 index fell 0.76% on Monday to close at 8,117.78 points, down from Friday's close of 8,179.77.
This decline was driven by a combination of factors, including AI safety warnings and surging oil prices. Over the weekend, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay calling on AI developers to slow the pace of frontier model development due to catastrophic safety risks.
The knock-on effect reached European markets through semiconductor and technology-adjacent suppliers exposed to the AI capital-expenditure cycle, including names tied to chip equipment and optics supply chains. STMicroelectronics and other Paris-listed technology and industrial names tracked the broader European semiconductor complex lower.
Brent crude extended its rally toward $109 a barrel after reports of a critical Saudi pipeline disruption, pushing oil more than 4% higher in a single session. Higher energy costs feed directly into inflation expectations and corporate input costs, a particular concern for industrial and consumer-facing constituents of the CAC 40.
