CAD Surges as Oil Prices Rise Amid US-Iran Tensions
The Canadian Dollar (CAD) has strengthened against the US Dollar (USD) despite hawkish Federal Reserve (Fed) rhetoric. The USD/CAD pair edged lower to around 1.3890 during Asian trading hours on Monday, boosted by renewed tensions between the US and Iran, which supported crude oil prices.
The price of crude oil has a significant impact on the CAD, as Canada is a major oil-exporting country. Higher oil prices generally have a positive effect on the Canadian Dollar. However, the Fed's hawkish stance could provide some support to the Greenback.
Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh warned that inflation is not slowing significantly and that unless policymakers become confident it is, the central bank has 'work to do.' This message was more hawkish than expected, with the FXS Speechtracker score at 7.4/10 compared to the established baseline of 6.5/10.
