CAD Surges as Oil Prices Soar Amid Escalating US-Iran Tensions

The Canadian Dollar (CAD) is gaining ground due to rising crude oil prices, which have surged amid escalating tensions between the US and Iran. The price increase has led to a loss of value for the US dollar (USD) against the CAD, with USD/CAD trading around 1.3770 during Asian hours on Friday.

The US is imposing strict economic measures on Iran in response to its nuclear program and regional conflicts, which are expected to severely limit Tehran's access to global commercial and financial networks. The move aims to force Iran into negotiations, with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stating that applying maximum economic pressure makes large-scale military intervention less probable.

Strategists at Scotiabank note that the CAD is benefiting from a combination of broad dollar weakness and progress on US-Canada trade. They point out that intraday gains remain contained, but emphasize that the currency's 0.3% rise is second only to the NZD among major currencies.
