Canada Abandons Trade Talks, Imposes Tariffs on US Goods
Canada's trade talks with the US have hit a roadblock after Ottawa announced it would impose tariffs on American goods in response to Washington's 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian imports.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that his country 'cannot accept what they've offered, and we will not give what they asked,' citing the US demand for restrictions on Canadian trade deals with other countries and French-language rules as major sticking points.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer countered that Ottawa 'wanted more' from the negotiations, but Carney remained firm in his stance, saying Canada would focus on building its economy at home and diversifying trading relationships abroad.
