Canada Abandons Trade Talks with US Amid 'Uneconomic' Proposals

Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney recently announced that Canada is walking away from trade negotiations with the United States. According to Carney, the US proposed new terms that were 'uneconomic, unfair, and undermined the net benefits to Canada,' essentially asking for too much while offering too little.

The US relationship has fundamentally changed, and Canada can no longer count on easy access to US markets, capital, and technology, or a special relationship with the US. Carney emphasized that Canada must build an economy less vulnerable to US pressures and capitalize on opportunities in other parts of the world.

To achieve this, Canada will need to undergo disruptive change, investing in massive infrastructure, training workers for new industries, transitioning to a green economy, and developing digital sovereignty. The country's productivity performance has been dismal over the past decade, and many Canadians feel they are falling behind while governments struggle with debt.
