Canada and BC Sign Historic Agreement to Accelerate Major Infrastructure Projects
The Canadian government and British Columbia have signed an agreement to accelerate major infrastructure projects in the province. The Canada-British Columbia Cooperative Prosperity Agreement aims to boost LNG supply, increase copper production, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The agreement includes funding for several key projects: $500 million for the Red Chris Mine Expansion, which will increase copper production by 15%, and $3.9 billion for the North Coast Transmission Line, which will create $10 billion in new economic activity and reduce emissions by up to three million tonnes annually.
The agreement also includes funding for the Port of Vancouver-Roberts Bank trade corridor, which will unlock over $100 billion in new trade capacity, and the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project, which will add approximately $3 billion to Canada's economy every year.
According to Prime Minister Mark Carney, 'Today's historic agreement creates the conditions to transform the B.C. and Canadian economies to become more resilient, sustainable, and independent.'
B.C. Premier David Eby added that the agreement will deliver faster commutes, less pollution, and shared prosperity.
