Canada Cuts US Travel by 25% Amid Trump Trade Disputes

Canadian travelers significantly reduced their visits to the US in 2025, with border crossings plummeting by 25.4% from 39 million to 29.1 million, according to Statistics Canada.

This decline is the deepest sustained drop outside of the COVID-19 shutdown and exceeds even the post-9/11 period in 2001.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney attributed this shift to President Donald Trump's tariffs and trade disputes, which damaged the country's auto and steel sectors and dragged on the broader economy.

Despite the decline in US travel, Canadians redirected their spending domestically, with domestic trips rising by 8.7% to C$81.3 billion.
