Canada Defies Western Narratives on China Trade with Surging Exports
Canada's labor force has seen significant growth in July, defying expectations and reinforcing the Bank of Canada's view that businesses are adapting to US trade restrictions.
The country added a surprising 75,100 jobs in July, with both full-time and part-time sectors showing strong gains. The unemployment rate dropped from 6.5% to 6.4%, its lowest level in two years, according to Reuters.
This unexpected resilience is largely attributed to Canada's efforts at trade diversification. Exports to non-US markets have been increasing, with a notable surge of 29% in exports to China in the first seven months of this year, according to Chinese customs data.
The growth has been particularly evident in sectors such as lumber and agriculture, where demand from the Chinese market is providing new momentum for domestic industries and underpinning employment.
