Canada-EU Alliance Sparks Concern Over Impact on US Trade Relations

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's interest in strengthening ties with the European Union has raised eyebrows, particularly after he described Canada as 'the most European of non-European countries' last summer.

This remark sparked speculation that his true goal was to join the EU, but it seemed unrealistic given the economic disparity between the two entities. The EU has a massive economy and GDP, while Canada is a middle power with its own strengths in natural resources and trade.

A new report from Bloomberg reveals that Canada and the EU are working on an all-encompassing relationship that will cover areas such as trade, security, supply chains, and critical raw materials. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is set to address this topic at her state of the union address in Strasbourg, France on September 16.

Critics argue that pursuing a Canada-EU relationship at the expense of its largest trading partner, the US, would be a costly mistake. Trade between Canada and the US has always been mutually beneficial, with nearly $3.6 billion worth of goods and services crossing the border each day in 2024.
