Canada Exempts Seafood from Tariffs, Easing Fears for Maine Lobster Industry
Canada has decided to exclude seafood from its proposed tariffs on American goods, easing concerns for Maine's lobster industry. The decision comes after Canada announced retaliatory taxes on $27.6 billion worth of U.S. imports, including forest products and hundreds of other Canadian products.
Maine's lobster industry was facing a 25% import tax, which would have severely disrupted the market at the height of the fall fishing season. The Maine Lobstermen's Association had raised concerns about the proposed tariff earlier in the week, citing thin margins in an already struggling industry.
Canada's Department of Finance announced the decision to remove seafood and fish products from its list of counter tariffs after receiving feedback from the Canadian fisheries sector. This move is seen as a targeted adjustment to protect Canada's coastal economy.
