Canada Faces Potential Tens of Thousands of Job Losses Due to New US Tariffs

Canada's business community is feeling the pain of the new 50% tariffs imposed by the US. The tariffs, which affect $28 billion worth of Canadian exports to the US, could shave half a percentage point off Canada's GDP growth, according to BMO senior economist Robert Kavcic.

Kavcic notes that while the impact on the broader economy is limited, specific industries will feel it acutely. The new tariffs will be felt most by producers of electronics and electrical equipment, plastics, furniture, bedding, and lighting. Ontario and Quebec are highly exposed to these sectors, but British Columbia is also impacted due to its reliance on paper and wood exports.

Smaller Canadian businesses may struggle the most with the new tariffs, as they might be forced to replace their products with American options or stop exporting altogether. The CFIB found that 40% of its members who export to the US are affected by the tariffs, and 35% expect revenue to fall by at least half.

Economist Trevor Tombe estimates that tens of thousands of jobs could be lost in Canada due to the new tariffs. He calculates that 52,000 jobs in affected sectors are at stake, but sectors supporting these industries also face losses, potentially adding another 35,000 job losses.

The uncertainty surrounding the US-Canada trade relationship is a major concern for businesses and economists alike. The risk of retaliatory tariffs and the impact on Canadian jobs make it likely that companies will hold off on hiring or investing until this clears up.
