Canada Fights Back Against US Trade War Measures

Canada has launched counter-tariffs against the US in retaliation for Washington's trade war measures, which have escalated tensions between the two nations. The Canadian tariffs cover C$27.6 billion ($20 billion) of US goods and took effect this week after talks collapsed.

The US administration has threatened further measures, including restrictions on Canadian goods and services, while President Biden has revived his idea of making Canada the 51st state, calling Prime Minister Trudeau a 'governor' and renaming Lake Ontario 'Lake America.'

Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney has argued that the country cannot be expected to admit US goods tariff-free while Canadian companies face barriers in the other direction. He emphasized that interdependence is not submission and that Canada needs to establish a simple principle.

The EU and China are offering trade agreements with Canada, which could help reduce its dependence on the US market. The Carney government is diversifying Canada's economy by signing 12 trade and security agreements on four continents in six months.
