Canada Fires Back at Trump's Trade Deficit Threats with Homegrown Resource Plan
Canada has hit back at US President Donald Trump's trade deficit threats by pointing out that the country relies heavily on Canadian resources. According to a report, Canada will no longer discuss sharing critical minerals as an asset with the United States.
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson made the announcement, referencing the 1978 film 'Animal House' when he said, 'I don't get mad, I get even.' The minister was referring to a new transmission line project in British Columbia that will double electricity capacity by 2032 and power new critical mineral mines near the Alaskan border.
Hodgson emphasized that nothing would make him happier than using all Canadian electricity for domestic purposes. He also stated that Canada could build new mines and processing facilities, which would not require US resources or trade.
Trump had claimed earlier that he could cut off trade entirely, causing Canada's economy to collapse, as 95 percent of its trade would be wiped out if the US stopped trading with Canada.
