Canada Hits Back at Trump with Tariffs on $20 Billion in US Goods
Canada has retaliated against US President Donald Trump's trade war by imposing tariffs on hundreds of American products, including steel, aluminum, cheese, appliances, clothing, cosmetics, and farm equipment. The tariffs, which take effect immediately, match Washington's dollar for dollar and rate for rate, covering about $20 billion in American goods. This move is part of Canada's efforts to resist Trump's economic pressure, with Prime Minister Mark Carney calling the US demands a threat to Canadian industries and independence.
The tariffs have sparked a response from the White House, with Trump threatening to punish Canada further by banning aircraft sales from Bombardier unless they manufacture planes in the US. The move has been met with defiance from Canadians, who are rallying behind Carney and boycotting US goods. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly stated that Canada will show the world that it can win this trade war.
The Canadian economy grew at a 3.2 percent annualized rate in the second quarter, more than twice the 1.5 percent pace in the US. However, Trump's pressure has backfired, strengthening support for Carney rather than forcing concessions. Historian Robert Bothwell stated that Trump's aim is to make an example of Canada and theoretically terrify other governments.
