Canada Hits Back at Trump with Tariffs on US Imports
Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced the imposition of tariffs on American imports as a direct response to President Donald Trump's recent tariffs. This move aims to shield Canada's economy and safeguard its workers, farmers, and businesses from the impact of Trump's trade policies.
The tariffs, which took effect at midnight, are a result of the failure to secure a new trade deal between the two nations. The USMCA agreement, which was meant to replace NAFTA, has been complicated by last-minute U.S. demands deemed unfair by Carney.
According to the Prime Minister, Trump's tariffs have excluded Canadian goods under the USMCA, disrupting $20 billion worth of Canadian exports to the U.S. This has triggered Canada's defensive measures, including the imposition of tariffs on American imports.
Trade experts warn that this move could have adverse impacts on vulnerable Canadian sectors, particularly in Ontario where some industries are already struggling.
